I bet the rear quarter visibility is great.

Also, current Civic is pretty far from "good stuff".

That's awesome! And they should also bring back the Civic hatchback.

It isn't really that much worse than most other US-market cars though.

That looks horrible and I really like wagons and hatches. But to each his own, just not for me.

It's a good thing they're bringing the wagon back (to Europe). The lack of a wagon was one of the multitude of reasons Euro Civic sales are slow compared to the competition. This one however, I think I'll quote someone in the comments about these car on the Dutch site where I saw it first:

"A for effort, F for result."

Well, Honda EU did this as an independent project, with a car that was already on the market and a limited budget. If you think at that and at the fact that most wagon buyers care about the class leading practicability more than about looks(otherwise they'd have a hatchback or sedan), I'd say this is an A+, overall.

Your cost argument seems plausible, but you'd be surprised about how many people buy the wagon here and for what reason they do. In Western Europe a sedan isn't even available for most models in this segment, including the Civic as the last non-hybrid/IMA Civic sedan reached our shores in 2001 or so. The few available compact sedans sell marginally at best. For popular cars in the segment like the Opel Astra, Ford Focus and Renault Megane the wagon easily outsells all other versions. The VW Golf(/Jetta) wagon lags behind because the wagon version of that has usually been found aesthetically challenged. So the sales were slow... because of the looks.

I can't determine how the average potential Civic wagon buyer will determine the looks, but I predict that if they dislike the look as much as I think they will this wagon won't be very successful. Not that I don't wish Honda a bit more success in Europe, they're different en quirky enough to deserve a bigger presence in the market.
